The procedure

What is FUE hair transplant?

The modern, minimally invasive technique for natural-looking hair restoration

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a hair restoration technique where individual hair follicles are extracted one at a time from a donor area, usually the back or sides of the head, and transplanted to areas of thinning or balding. Because each follicle is removed individually rather than as a strip, there is no linear scar and recovery is typically faster than older techniques.

At our Surrey clinic on Surrey clinic (call for address), FUE is performed by GMC-registered doctors using fine-bore punches to preserve follicle integrity. Transplanted hairs grow at their new location with the same characteristics as in the donor area, including colour, texture, and growth rate.

FUE is suitable for restoring scalp hair, beard, eyebrows, and other body hair areas. We also offer the unshaven FUE technique for patients who prefer not to have their donor area shaved before the procedure.

Your journey

The 4-step procedure

What to expect from consultation through to your final result

1

Consultation

A GMC-registered doctor reviews your hair loss pattern, donor area, medical history, and goals. You receive a personalised treatment plan and a clear, written quote.

2

Preparation

On the day of the procedure, the donor area is prepared and local anaesthetic is administered. The treatment is performed in our Surrey clinic in a single day.

3

Extraction and placement

Follicles are extracted individually using fine-bore punches and placed into pre-made recipient sites at the angle and density matched to your existing hair.

4

Aftercare

You go home the same evening with written aftercare instructions and follow-up reviews scheduled at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.

Your first visit

What happens at your free consultation

A relaxed, no-pressure conversation. Bring questions, leave with clarity.

1

Greeting and history

You meet a GMC-registered doctor at our Surrey clinic (call for address) clinic. They take your medical history and discuss the pattern and timeline of your hair loss.

2

Scalp examination

The doctor examines your donor area, hair density, and skin condition. This determines whether FUE is suitable and how many grafts your case would need.

3

Plan and quote

You receive a personalised treatment plan, a clear written quote, expected timeline, recovery information, and answers to all your questions. Take it home to think about.

4

No-pressure decision

You choose whether to proceed. There is no obligation. If you decide to book, we agree a procedure date that works for you and explain the pre-procedure protocol.

Post-procedure

Aftercare and recovery timeline

What happens after your procedure, week by week

  • Day 1. Same-day discharge with full written aftercare instructions and direct contact details
  • Day 2 to 7. Gentle washing protocol begins. Mild redness in donor and recipient areas is normal
  • Week 2 to 4. Crusting fades. Most patients return to non-strenuous work within a few days after the procedure
  • Month 1 to 3. Initial shedding phase. Transplanted hair sheds, follicles enter resting phase. This is normal
  • Month 4 to 6. New hair growth begins, initially finer in texture. Density gradually builds
  • Month 9 to 12. Hair thickens to final density. Final assessment review at 12 months
  • Direct line throughout. Contact details provided for any concerns at any stage of recovery

Risks and side effects we discuss with you

Like any medical procedure, FUE carries risks. We cover them fully at consultation so you can make an informed decision.

Temporary swelling

Mild swelling of the forehead or around the eyes can occur in the first few days, then resolves on its own.

Redness and crusting

Small areas of redness and crusting at extraction and placement sites are normal in the first two weeks.

Initial shedding

Transplanted follicles typically shed in the first 1 to 3 months before regrowing. This is part of the normal cycle.

Variable density outcomes

Final density depends on individual graft survival, technique, and biology. Not every case achieves the same density. Your doctor explains realistic ranges at consultation.

Minor scarring

FUE leaves tiny, scattered punctate marks in the donor area rather than a linear scar. These typically fade significantly over months.

Infection (rare)

As with any procedure, infection is possible but rare. Our written aftercare protocol minimises risk; we provide direct contact for any concerns during recovery.

A full risk discussion is part of every consultation. We support a cooling-off period before any procedure decision is finalised.

Considering travel?

UK clinic vs travelling abroad

Things to weigh up before booking hair transplant outside the UK

At our Surrey clinic

  • GMC-registered doctors with verified qualifications
  • CQC-registered clinic (location 1-3773466267)
  • Local follow-up at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months
  • Aftercare support a phone call away
  • UK consumer protection and ASA-regulated information
  • 0% finance available (subject to status)
  • No travel, accommodation, or time-off costs
  • Same day consult to same week procedure

Travelling abroad

  • Doctor qualifications may not be UK-equivalent
  • Clinic regulation varies; CQC does not apply
  • Follow-up requires return flights or remote review only
  • Aftercare support across time zones
  • Recourse limited if outcomes are not as discussed
  • Flights, hotel, and time-off add to the headline price
  • Holiday photos can publicly identify the procedure
  • Procedure travel risks (blood-clot risk on long flights post-procedure)

Travelling abroad for hair restoration is a personal decision. We encourage you to compare on safety, accountability, and total cost rather than headline price alone.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Helpful answers before your free Surrey consultation

How long does an FUE procedure take?

Most procedures take 6 to 8 hours in a single day, depending on graft count. You can return home the same evening.

Is the consultation really free and no-obligation?

Yes. Your initial consultation with a GMC-registered doctor is free and carries no obligation to proceed. You receive a personalised, written pricing quote at that consultation.

Will there be visible scarring?

FUE leaves tiny, scattered punctate marks rather than a linear scar. These typically fade significantly within several months. Patients usually find the donor area looks normal once hair grows back.

How much does it cost?

Indicative starting pricing is from ยฃ1,999 for up to 1,500 grafts, and from ยฃ2,499 for up to 3,500 grafts. Final pricing is confirmed at your free consultation based on your specific graft count and technique.

Do you offer 0% finance?

Yes, 0% interest-free finance is available subject to status. Full terms are explained at your consultation.

When will I see results?

Most patients see initial growth at 4 to 6 months and final results around 9 to 12 months after the procedure. Results vary case to case.

What aftercare is included?

Comprehensive post-procedure aftercare is included with every treatment: a written protocol, contact details for any concerns, and scheduled follow-up reviews at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.

Who performs the procedure?

FUE is performed by GMC-registered doctors at the Surrey clinic. Your consulting doctor discusses the procedure with you and answers all questions before you decide whether to proceed.

How do I get to the Surrey clinic?

The clinic is at Surrey clinic (call for address), a Close to Surrey rail network, with parking options nearby. Call 020 8916 9882 for directions.

Can I book a video consultation if I cannot visit in person?

Yes. We offer video consultations as well as in-clinic appointments. Call or WhatsApp us to arrange a time that suits you.

Is FUE permanent?

Transplanted follicles from the back and sides of the scalp are typically resistant to the hormone that causes pattern hair loss, so the relocated hair is generally long-lasting. Future natural hair loss elsewhere is not affected by the transplant.

Can FUE be combined with other treatments?

At consultation, your GMC-registered doctor will advise on the best treatment plan for your specific case, including whether any supportive options are appropriate.
